Although my Uncle survived the D Day landings wounded with shrapnel still near his spine which was too dangerous to remove. Whilst running for their lives on the beaches of Normany a Captain nearby took the full brunt of the shell hit and stripped him leaving only his skull and spine left. My Uncle witnessed this and suffered PTSD all of his life with no treatment. His life was ruined, he was one of the lucky ones?
